Camp life and culture

Come as you are🔥We’ll walk you in.

Temple Guardians contain multitudes, and this camp gathers the full constellation.

We span generations, from mid-20s first-time Burners to dust-caked veterans with 25+ years of desert sunrises etched into their bones. Some of us are rugged outdoorsfolk; others arrive wide-eyed, asking questions and learning fast. We’re united not by experience, but by passion, curiosity, and a willingness to show up and learn.

We are designers, software developers, scientists, artists, antiquers, pilots, operators, servicemembers, healers, mechanics, explorers, and musicians. Builders of systems and stewards of moments, people fluent in both material logistics and cerebral reverence. We come from different backgrounds, but we recognize the same call when we see it.

Temple Guardians are the silent sentries of Black Rock City. We’re not loud or flashy, but seamlessly and unmistakably there. We are the steady figures in the distance when something sacred is happening, the calm in the playa storms, the ones who stay when others drift away. In an ephemeral city that at first glance may seem built on spectacle, that kind of presence is its own form of power.

This camp doesn’t look for consistency or perfection. It’s about trust, practice, and showing up as you are. Temple Oasis leadership is visible and accessible, focused on support rather than judgement. Questions are welcome. Learning is expected. Even our most experienced Guardians are still refining how they do their work.

If you’re new to Burning Man, new to the Temple Guardians, or just unsure whether you “fit,” you’re good, take it easy. This camp isn’t insular - no one arrives fully formed here. We’ll teach you what you need to know, answer your questions (there are no stupid questions!), and make sure you’re supported as you learn.

You don’t need to be stoic, spiritual, or seasoned. You just need to be sincere, respectful, and open to the work required of a resilient Temple Guardian. This camp holds first-timers and long-timers side by side, and we all remember what it felt like to be new. Nobody will toss you into the deep end without a helping hand to grab.

If you’ve ever felt the call to protect a vulnerable moment that matters for someone, no matter what state they’re in, where they’re coming from, what they need to express, or what they may leave behind, we want you with us. You get to decide to step in to the work, and we’ll welcome you when you do.

Sheltering from the rain - pre-burn 2025

The rhythm of Temple Oasis

Your week at camp

It’s the start of Burn week. The opening-night chaos has softened; the wild swirls of dust and headlights have settled into the subtle bass-toned heartbeat of the playa. Maybe you’ve just finished setting up your tent, or maybe you’ve already been collecting dust from early build. Either way, there’s a moment where the pace shifts and arrival gives way to belonging.

On Monday at the start of the Burn, we hold an all-hands camp meeting. From the community canopy, music drifts across camp calling us to gather as a full camp for the first time, to meet the whole playa family and get acculturated together. The camp is intentionally small enough that connection comes easily. We start by getting to know each other, then move into a practical on-site walkthrough of shifts, expectations, and procedures first introduced during pre-playa planning. You’ll be shown around the camp facilities and have all your questions answered by your camp leads and other wise Burners in the group. Open discussion and ideas are eagerly welcomed so we can shape the camp for the unique group that occupies it each year.

As the week unfolds, camp work stays light when we all pitch in. Everyone participates in Leave No Trace, and campers may also choose to help with breakfast, ice runs, or tending the memorial creation station during its thrice-weekly openings. There’s plenty of room for rest, play, wandering and exploration, and quiet recalibrations.

Saturday morning and afternoon are devoted to striking the majority of camp, our final all-hands task. Many of us will be called to serve closing Temple shifts on Sunday, so we do this work together, ahead of time, with care and efficiency. Campers begin departing on Monday, and by Tuesday evening our little piece of the playa returns to open dust. A camp as ephemeral as the city itself, yet cozy and familiar each year when we build it again.
